The ISO standard for the SAM process is currently being developed. The third version will cover ITAM, and integrate various standards for Service Management, Information Security, and Quality Management, just to name a few.

ISO/IEC 19770 is a standard that was first implemented in 2006. It was made to help organizations put into place procedures and processes for more effective ITAM. There are two parts of the ISO/IEC 19770, and the first part is the ISO/IEC 19770-1, which was last updated in 2012.

A lot of companies think that ISO/IEC 19770-1 has been made for software compliance and audit. While they are vital elements, the standard also covers all aspects of a business and how senior management control various ITAM and SAM processes.

The new version of the ISO/IEC 19770-1 is expected to be published early next year, but will be functional before that. The most recent draft was made available to the public last February. ITAM/ITAD industry leaders have seen several notable features and changes in the proposed revision.

The first feature that was noted by most industry leaders is that the proposed revision maintains the principles of the second edition of the standards. Any of the organizations that have used the second version for their certification, improvement, or self-assessment are assured that they will transition once the new version is implemented.

The third edition will still use tiers. The difference is that they are made to be more user-friendly and intuitive. There are three tiers, which are life-cycle integration, optimization, and trustworthy data.

The ISO/IEC 19770-1 is being revised through a new high-level structure. It utilizes common wording as required by ISO for Management System Standard or MSS; ISO/IEC 27001 or Information Security Management; and ISO 9001 or Quality Management, just to name a few. The new edition will also use the Integrated Use of Management Systems or IUMS. It will make it easy for ITAM managers to integrate the ISO/IEC 19770-1 with Service Management and Information Security Management.

The new edition is based on ISO 55001, which is the guideline for generic asset management. It was developed in handling physical assets, and in order to make it relevant for information technology asset management, ITAM/ITAD experts were consulted.

The third revision of the ISO/IEC 19770-1 has incorporated ISO 55001 requirements in order to meet the special characteristics of ITAM and SAM. These features control licensing, software, cloud computing, and mixed personal responsibility scenarios.

The third edition of the ISO/IEC 19770-1 will be a welcome change to the standard. Once implemented, ITAM/ITAD managers are able to do their jobs in a more efficient manner. The new edition will update the standards to handle the current ITAM scenarios.
